UTSA Men’s Basketball trots out new-look roster for the 2026-2027 season

Headed into the 2026-2027 season, UTSA men’s basketball will welcome 14 new players to its roster, after only retaining sophomore guard Dorian Hayes. In just a matter of months, head coach Austin Claunch has once again rebuilt his roster from the ground up. The team looks to be a formidable one within the American Athletic Conference. With a key emphasis on guard depth and a strong defensive foundation in the frontcourt, this year’s Roadrunners will undoubtedly be an improvement over last year’s roster, which finished with a 4-25 regular season record. Though there are still months before the season’s tipoff and numerous roster adjustments to be made, it is safe to say that the Roadrunners are headed in a positive direction. 

As it stands, UTSA possesses immense backcourt depth. Of the 15-man roster, 10 players are listed as guards. Breakouts from the roster include Hayes, who will likely be a key cog in the offensive system. High school commit Naz Price, sophomore transfer Josiah LeGree and junior transfer Isaiah Watts all look to make an assertive impact as well, with each possessing high I.Q, a willingness to share the ball and the ability to score consistently. LeGree is one of the best passers in the American and will likely start as a pass-first point guard on opening night. Price is fresh off of a dominant high school campaign and a true scorer at each level of the game. Watts is an elite shot creator with the ability to carve out space from anywhere on the court. Each of UTSA’s incoming guards possesses unique attributes and has shown flashes of elite play with former teams. Looking to lead a fast-paced run-and-gun offensive attack, Claunch finally has the tools necessary to unlock his system. 

Along with the added backcourt depth, the university has made vast improvements to the various frontcourt positions. A mix of collegiate veterans and high school recruiting this year has given the Roadrunners a talent level superior to that of last year’s forwards and centers. Freshman Mike Broxton Jr. looks to be a consistent double-double threat at the division one level, while more experienced players such as senior Chinedum Okpukpara and graduate Ashton Smith are expected to be defensive anchors for the team, contesting and blocking numerous shots inside of the paint. Fellow freshman signings Kanyon Taylor and Jayson Peterson round out the forwards for UTSA. While Taylor and Peterson are likely to take a backseat to their fellow forwards, the duo’s talent and high ceiling make them one of the most interesting projects for UTSA as the season develops. Both have a knack for scoring in the paint along with a stout basketball I.Q. 

While the Roadrunners’ schedule has yet to be released, fans should expect the team to finish the season with a winning record. The additions of strong guard play and tenacious frontcourt give UTSA its most balanced roster in the last three years. With Claunch at the helm, it is clear that the ‘Runners will see vast improvements over previous seasons. For the first time in five years, UTSA will look to finally contend within the American Conference.
