Film Breakdown: Texas 2026

While UTSA may have been physically out-matched by the #1 Texas Longhorns, the moment wasn’t too big for the Roadrunners. Led by a ferocious showing from the defense, UTSA played well beyond their capabilities to frustrate the Longhorns all night. The offense didn’t enjoy the same level of success, as penalties and other self-inflected wounds made it hard for Owen McCown and company to sustain success. It was the first time the Roadrunners have failed to find the end zone since October 2024. Let’s take a look at some plays that might teach us something about this team moving forward.

Given that UTSA’s day started with an interception on the first play of the game, it’s a miracle UTSA was able to keep this game as close as it was for most of the contest. The replay shows that the ball clearly connected cleanly into DJ Allen’s hands — this pick isn’t on Owen. While Owen hasn’t lit up the scoreboard so far this year, McCown has yet to throw a turnover that he was responsible for in 2026.

UTSA’s best play against Texas was consistently outside zone. The Roadrunners’ size on the edge gave Will Henderson a chance to flash his elite speed as he was able to find the corner even against Texas’s elite defenders until the Longhorns made some adjustments to get more run help out wide.

On this play Deandre Marshall and Isaiah Butler-Tanner create a good hole for Henderson, but he opts to bounce to the sideline where Mekhi Anderson wisely blocks down on the linebacker with a crack block instead of taking the safety lined up directly over him. I’ve been very impressed with the blocking the youngster out of Florida has put on tape this season.
