After months of anticipation, the UTSA men’s basketball season has finally arrived. The Roadrunners have released both their conference and non-conference schedule, packed with high-intensity games and must-see action. This year offers no shortage of interesting games. Each is set to have its own storyline, high-leverage moments and incredible highlights. The team hopes to see a major improvement over the previous season, giving fans a reason to check out some of the biggest games on the schedule. While there are countless standouts, a few rank high above the rest. With that being said, these are the top three must-see home games of the year for the Roadrunners.
Texas State, Nov. 15
Hosting the I-35 Rivalry for the first time since 2022, the Roadrunners will be eager to welcome the Bobcats back to campus. Arguably the year’s most anticipated game, the two teams have had a plethora of battles over the last five years. Despite losing last year’s matchup, the ‘Runners will look to reclaim the crown this season, thanks to a feisty backcourt and scrappy defensive frontcourt. Guards Isaiah Coleman, Josiah LeGree and Dorian Hayes will likely see strong minutes throughout the contest. Each is an astute defender and scorer, capable of creating defensive stops and capitalizing on offensive mismatches. Freshman forward Mike Broxton Jr. will also play a huge role, serving as the ‘Runner’s defensive anchor in the paint. Broxton will likely have the task of slowing down Bobcats forward DJ Hall. An elite finisher around the basket and an overall scorer, Hall will be the biggest focus for UTSA’s defense. The matchup will be the most exciting of the season and will serve as a strong test for the Roadrunners as they delve into their schedule.
University of South Florida, Jan. 23
Projected to be one of the top teams in the American, UTSA’s hosting of the University of South Florida will be one of the season’s most interesting games. Both teams possess elite talent and depth at the guard positions. The Bulls possess a 17-point-per-game scorer in guard Sonny Wilson, while the Roadrunners feature numerous talents with KJ Tenner, Isaiah Coleman, Josiah LeGree among others. Both Bulls coach Chris Mack and new Roadrunner coach Nick Bowman emphasize a high pick-and-roll offense, making the matchup a backcourt battle. Touted by numerous analysts as one of the top teams in the conference, the Bulls will serve as a true test to see where UTSA ranks amongst its competitors. With a slight home-court advantage, UTSA will need to play its best to take down one of its fiercest opponents. The contest is sure to be filled with high-scoring, electric offensive plays and crowd-enticing moments. Though it is an incredibly tough matchup for UTSA, it remains one of the must-see games on the schedule this year.
Memphis University, Feb. 14
In seasons prior, games against Memphis University have always packed the Convocation Center. The reasoning is simple. Head coach Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway is arguably one of college basketball’s most famous coaches, and the Tigers are a highly sought-after program. Though the team has always been highly regarded, Memphis found itself in a similar spot to UTSA last year. Both teams produced disappointing seasons, and now look to compete in the American with an entirely new roster. Though the Tigers may have the higher level of talent on paper, their contest against the Roadrunners will be anything but a blowout. Despite carrying an incredible amount of offensive firepower, Memphis’ defense leaves a lot to be desired. Their hesitancy to recover on help defense will allow UTSA a small window to capitalize on defensive miscues. If the Roadrunners live up to the offensive expectations they have set for themselves, the contest will be much closer than analysts are predicting. The addition of a home-court advantage will easily make the Valentine’s day matchup one of the most important of the year.
