Tomorrow UTSA will kick off conference play on the road against the Rice Owls. While fans are riding high following UTSA’s strong start to the season, the last trip to Houston was a rough one for the Roadrunners as the Owls walked it off against UTSA with a diving catch in the back of the end zone as time expired. We reached out to our friends at At the Roost to learn more about how the Owls have looked so far in 2026, and how Rice will plan to attack the Roadrunners in what may be a rain-soaked contest.
1. Rice stands at 1-3 on the season but has shown some signs of growth under Scott Abell. What is the most positive indicator you’ve seen from the team so far?
The offense has looked fantastic, even without their top two slots, Quinton Jackson and Davis Lane, out for most of the season. Quarterback Jacurri Brown can take over games and has shown just enough promise through the air to keep defenses honest. Abell was brought in to deliver a unique offense that keeps opponents off balance but there was always an understanding it wouldn’t happen overnight with this scheme. Four games into Year 2, things seem to be on schedule, if not a little bit ahead.
Thanks again to Matthew from At the Roost for the Q&A, be sure to check out their podcast this week on the Dave Campbell’s College Podcast Network!
