Argyle quarterback Maguire Gasperson received an offer from UTSA on May 13 following a conversation with the Roadrunners’ quarterback coach, Pavit Patel. A little more than a month later, he decided to commit to UTSA after his official visit to San Antonio.

He chose the Roadrunners over offers from Georgia State, Maryland, North Texas, Northern Arizona, Tulane, Cornell, Abilene Christian, Lamar, Holy Cross, Rhode Island, Louisiana-Monroe, and UTEP.

“Coach Patel offered me, and I was glad to get the opportunity to play for such a great program. Since the offer, Coach Patel and I have been able to learn more about each other and how we operate. His knowledge of the game will help me develop throughout my time with him. I believe in him, and I’m glad to have him as my coach.

My visit to San Antonio was a really cool experience. It was great to learn more about the university and the football program. I enjoyed touring the facilities and meeting with the offensive staff. My host was Noah Lugo. He joined us at dinner on both nights of my visit. I was able to ask him more about the offense and coaching staff.”

Gasperson has built a great relationship with his new quarterback coach, Patel, and met offensive coordinator Justin Burke during his visit.

“My relationship with UTSA started with Coach Patel’s offer during the spring. He’s been very serious about me during the process and truly believes in me. I was also able to meet with Coach Burke during the visit and learn more about the offense and his mindset. I believe in what he is doing and his coaching style.”

Gasperson also had the opportunity to meet with head coach Jeff Traylor, who he says reminds him of his coach at Argyle, Jeff Rodgers.

“I was able to meet with Coach Traylor multiple times throughout the visit. He has a close relationship with my head coach, Todd Rodgers, because of his time at Gilmer. He is leading the program in a great direction and holding the standard at a high level. I want to be around that culture and develop under his coaching staff.”

It was the culture that Coach Traylor built during his time with the Roadrunners that led Gasperson to commit.

“What led me to commit to UTSA was the culture that I felt when I was on my visit. I believe Coach Traylor holds his program to the same standard as Coach Rodgers. I want to be around like-minded people who want to succeed and grow. I think that UTSA is a place where I can develop and contribute to their success.”

Last season, Gasperson was named the District 3-5A MVP and completed 63% of his passes for 2,895 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also rushed for 382 yards and seven touchdowns for the Eagles, leading them to the state semifinals. The hope is for them to make another deep playoff run this season.

“Our off-season has been going great, and spring ball helped us grow as a team. Lots of competition between good players allows us to make each other better. Our team is looking really strong going into the season. We have a lot of returning starters who have helped contribute to our success in the past couple of years.”
