UTSA often looked outmatched against TXST, and were often on the verge of collapse, yet Jeff Traylor and his Roadrunners found a way to win on the road. It was the type of gritty performance that these Roadrunners were once known for, but had become rare in the post-Harris era. Let’s break down some key plays from UTSA’s road upset.

After UTSA’s defense took advantage of mental mistakes from the Bobcats on the opening drive, UTSA had a perfect opportunity to strike quickly and set the tone for the game. The Roadrunners were able to move the ball a bit after a good punt return from David Amador, but Owen McCown was unable to convert this third and ten.

The Bobcats gave a prowl look up front with no down linemen, but only sent four on the rush, with one of the linebackers dropping into coverage. UTSA’s offensive line did not hold up well, forcing McCown to move up into the pocket really quickly. TXST used a Cover Three Match coverage to blanket all of UTSA’s receivers, including McCown’s check down options. The ideal approach from Owen here likely would have been to take off with a scramble, though I’m not certain he converts for ten yards. At this spot on the field, even a modest five yard gain would have given Jeff Traylor a great opportunity to go for it on fourth down.
